Electric mobility

Our aim is to achieve mobility that is not only electrified, but also sustainable

In order to achieve our shared climate objectives, we also need to reduce CO2 emissions in the transport sector. We have adopted a holistic approach: we want to make mobility more environmentally friendly and more efficient – and to do so sustainably. The new ID. Buzz Cargo is a good example of this comprehensive strategy. From innovative electric vehicles to smart charging solutions to sustainable recycling: we want to offer our customers a reliable one-stop service in order to make the switch to climate-conscious electric mobility more attractive.

An integrated concept: a holistic approach to modern electric mobility

Climate change poses enormous challenges to the environment, nature and society. This is why we are committed to the Paris Agreement and set ourselves ambitious targets. We want to be a carbon-neutral company by 2050 and we are assuming responsibility for the whole share of the value chain of our vehicles. After all, we can only achieve our goals through comprehensive, sustainable action. As part of our holistic electric mobility approach, therefore, we will ensure as far as possible that every part of the process is carried out on a carbon-neutral basis – from the extraction of raw materials and the supply chain to manufacture and use, and recycling. For instance, the new ID. Buzz Cargo is the first transporter from Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles to be conceived as an electric vehicle from the very beginning – from the first sketch to the final flourishes. The ID. Buzz Cargo is thus not only supplied to you on a carbon-neutral basis, but you can also drive it locally with zero carbon emissions. For the use of company cars, the ID. Charger Pro wall box is a convenient option for charging at home. If, in addition, the ID. Buzz Cargo is charged using green electricity, such as Volkswagen Naturstrom® or the photovoltaic system on your company site, it is a climate-smart way to hit the road. The new electric transporter will change our company and our mobility in a sustainable way.

Smart charging at home with your own wall box

Electric mobility has one major advantage that makes everyday life much more straightforward: electric vehicles such as the new ID. Buzz Cargo can be very easily charged at home. With the Home Charging Service, you, as fleet manager, can easily reimburse your drivers for the costs of charging for business purposes at their home charging station. All you need is a Charge&Fuel card and the ID. Charger Pro: a smart, powerful wall box that can also be used for company car billing thanks to an MID-certified electric meter. If this is also powered by certified carbon-neutral green electricity such as Volkswagen Naturstrom®, the ID. Buzz Cargo, supplied to your drivers on a carbon-neutral basis, is a particularly environmentally friendly way for them to hit the road.

Mobile across Europe: convenient charging on the move

With the ID. Buzz Cargo, commercial mobility is more flexible than ever. This is because you can charge the new electric transporter whenever it is stationary – including on the go: for example, at a public charging point on the motorway, at the supermarket or DIY store, in a car park or in a customer’s street. The maximum charging capacity for regular charging (AC) is 11 kW. When charging quickly (DC) – on the motorway, for example – it may only take approx. 30 minutes to charge the battery from 5% to 80% if the maximum charging capacity of the ID. Buzz Cargo of 170 kW is available. To make the charging process even simpler, thanks to Plug & Charge, in future you will only need to plug in the charging cable and charging will commence. With this technology, your authentication details will be stored in the car once. The charging station will then automatically identify who you are, which makes the process far more convenient. This technology will be rolled out gradually using an ISO-certified standard, which means that more and more Plug & Charge stations will soon become available. Where Plug & Charge is not yet available, you can conveniently use your Charge&Fuel card to access a total of more than 310,000 charging points across Europe, as well as IONITY, Europe’s largest fast-charging network. You can find available charging points simply and conveniently using the Charge&Fuel app.

Charging at work: individual solutions adapted to your mobility

Climate-friendly, innovative and practical: the new ID. Buzz Cargo facilitates the switch to modern commercial electric mobility. This also raises the question: which charging solutions are needed on company premises? With a suitable wall box, such as the optional ID. Charger Pro, you can easily charge your ID. Buzz Cargo while you are at work or overnight. The smart and powerful ID. Charger Pro offers professional digital access and billing systems, among other things, thanks to an MID-certified electric meter. If you need your vehicle to charge quicker, perhaps because the ID. Buzz Cargo is needed for deliveries during the day, you may need to consider purchasing a more powerful DC charging station. Would you like to charge several electric vehicles at one location – and also offer visitors charging facilities? Then the installation of load management helps. With large fleets, smart technology ensures that the charging capacity available is optimally distributed among all the electric vehicles to be charged. This avoids high investment costs to expand the network connection and prevents load peaks, which would lead to an increase in the service price to be paid annually. In addition, the roof of your company building is an ideal spot for installing a photovoltaic system to supply your company’s charging points. This would not only make your use of the new ID. Buzz Cargo particularly climate-friendly, but would also make a sustainable contribution to relieving the load on the general network and make you less dependent on electricity price trends.

Batteries & recycling: reliable, long-lasting, sustainable

Longer inspection intervals, fewer workshop visits and lower maintenance costs: unlike combustion engines, electric drive motors require very little maintenance, because there are no wear-prone parts such as a toothed belt, and no oil change is needed. Because modern electric vehicles such as the new ID. Buzz Cargo are designed to operate for long periods, many potential customers often ask how long the rechargeable battery lasts. With the new ID. Buzz Cargo, you can count on high quality. For its lithium-ion high-voltage battery, we guarantee a usable net battery energy content of at least 70% for eight years or up to 160,000 km driving performance. The battery impresses with its high energy and power density. It also has high cycle stability, low self-discharge and is maintenance-free.

However, factors such as the number and type of charging processes (AC/DC), observing charging limits or ambient temperatures affect their service life. Over time, this inevitably leads to reduced range. However, this does not mean that old batteries should be discarded. On the contrary, you can make a significant contribution to making our holistic strategy even more sustainable, for example through “second-life applications” in which we use batteries after they have been removed from vehicles, for example as energy storage. At the same time, we aim to recycle a high proportion of raw materials during recovery. For example, up to 97% of battery raw materials such as nickel, copper and lithium can already be recycled at our pilot plant in Salzgitter.
