Basic functions

Basic functions such as the Emergency Call Service and the legally required eCall Emergency System are available to you without the conclusion of a separate VW Connect or We Connect contract. If you wish to transfer selected personalised functions from one vehicle to another, you need a Discover Media or Discover Pro. You also need a Volkswagen ID user account and need to log into VW Connect or We Connect with your username and password.

Your gateway to Volkswagen’s digital services and the direct connection to your vehicle: with VW Connect or We Connect, your Volkswagen is ready for connectivity. Following one-off activation, you can use lots of helpful and innovative online services free of charge.

Usage of these free services requires you to sign up online to a separate VW Connect or We Connect contract with Volkswagen AG.

The entire world of digital services from Volkswagen brings connectivity to a new level: with your Volkswagen ID and VW Connect Plus or We Connect Plus activation, you have access to extra smart functions: from smart navigation with information almost in real time and Internet radio to using your smartphone as a remote control. Upgrades

Upgrades allows you to equip your Volkswagen with additional functions flexibly and at a later date. To purchase and use upgrades, you need a Volkswagen ID user account, a valid VW Connect or We Connect contract and your primary user credentials, i.e. the link between your user account and the specific vehicle. Your vehicle also needs to have the technical functions and hardware equipment required for the relevant product and may depend on the model year and production date. The upgrades available for the specific vehicle can be viewed and purchased by the primary user in the infotainment system In-Car Shop or in the Volkswagen Connect shopOpens an external link. Paid-for products can be purchased in the In-Car Shop2 and the Volkswagen Connect shop with the payment methods that are currently available and can be viewed there. Your Volkswagen dealership is also happy to advise on questions regarding upgrades and their availability. Purchased and activated functions remain with the vehicle, can be used by all drivers and cannot be transferred to other vehicles.

When you buy a new vehicle, you have the opportunity to use digital services from VW Connect / VW Connect Plus or We Connect / We Connect Plus for the free initial contract period. To use the VW Connect / VW Connect Plus or We Connect / We Connect Plus services, you must have a Volkswagen ID user account and need to log in with your username and password. Once the Volkswagen ID user account has been successfully set up and linked to your vehicle, you can use the vehicle-, country-, software- and equipment-specific digital services for an initial contract period free of charge. For this purpose, a separate VW Connect / VW Connect Plus or We Connect / We Connect Plus contract must be concluded with Volkswagen AG online at https://www.myvolkswagen.net or via the Volkswagen” app (available in the App Store and Google Play Store). The actual length of the free contract period depends on when you activate the digital services. From the ninetieth day after initial delivery at the latest, the free initial contract period will begin to reduce automatically. For the use of the Wi-Fi hotspot, data packages can be purchased from Cubic Telecom, our mobile communications partner, and used in the network coverage area within many European countries. The data in these packages can be used by all users and vehicle occupants. You can find information on conditions, prices and supported countries at https://vw.cubictelecom.com. Alternatively, you can use this service with a mobile device (e.g. smartphone) with the ability to function as a mobile Wi-Fi hotspot. In this case, the corresponding function is only available subject to an existing or separate mobile phone contract between you and your mobile network operator and only within the coverage area of the respective mobile network. Additional fees (for example, roaming charges) may arise when exchanging data on the Internet, depending on your particular mobile phone rate and especially when using the service abroad.

Availability also depends on vehicle model, equipment and software version installed. This also applies to third-party services. Only available with the optional Discover Pro (for Passat, Arteon and Golf) or Discover Media (Golf only) navigation systems and in conjunction with the Volkswagen app. Five free mobile keys are available to start with for the Passat and the Arteon and, once the function has been purchased, five mobile keys are also available for the Golf. Mobile keys can be redeemed within the first four years of conclusion of the VW Connect / We Connect contract. The transfer of a mobile key requires a key sender identity check through the Volkswagen Ident procedure. Following installation on a compatible smartphone, the mobile key has a one-year validity period tied to the device.

The Lock & Unlock service is security-related and requires an identity check using the Volkswagen Ident procedure. Your identity will be verified by a Volkswagen dealership or via AutoIdent procedure by IDNow.

Online Voice Control is currently available for the following languages: German, English (GB and US), French, Spanish, Czech and Italian. The language you can use to interact with Voice Control depends on the language selected in your infotainment system.

The online voice assistant is currently available for the following languages: English (UK and US), German, Danish, French, Italian, Dutch, Norwegian, Polish, Portuguese, Swedish, Spanish and Czech. For the languages English (UK and US), German, Spanish and Czech, there is also a connection to the knowledge database Wikipedia. For these languages, the “ChatGPT” artificial intelligence is also integrated (connection to Chat GPT Version 3.5 Turbo). Note: ChatGPT answers may vary, contain incomplete, inaccurate or irrelevant information, and infringe upon third-party rights. Accordingly, do not rely on the answers without checking them based on other sources of information. Furthermore, make sure that the use or dissemination of the responses, e.g. on social media or online, does not infringe upon any third-party rights (particularly copyrights or data protection rights). The language you can use to interact with the voice assistant depends on the language selected in your infotainment system. This is also responsible for the voice assistant functions, which may vary depending on the set language. If you consent to the processing of your location data for the online voice assistant, or add location information to your voice request, you will also receive location-specific search results. You may give consent while connecting your vehicle with your Volkswagen ID user account, or subsequently in your Volkswagen ID user account or via the following link https://www.myvolkswagen.net/start/en/onlinespeechconsent.html, which is also displayed in your vehicle infotainment system in the form of a QR code.

In principle, App-Connect enables the use of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto technologies. Both technologies are the responsibility of Apple and Google, whereby Volkswagen AG has no influence on country-specific availability of Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and therefore the availability of the relevant technology may vary according to country. The availability of Apple CarPlay can be found at https://www.apple.com/ios/feature-availability/#apple-carplay and the availability of Android Auto can be found at https://www.android.com/auto/. The functions may be subject to changes to content or may be ceased during the contract period. To avoid distraction, only certified apps can be started during the journey. In this context, please also be aware that some apps are not offered for each of the two technologies. Information on the compatibility of smartphones can be found for Apple CarPlay at https://www.apple.com/ios/carplay/ and for Android Auto at https://www.android.com/auto/. Apple CarPlay is a trademark of Apple Inc. Android Auto is a trademark of Google LLC.

Use of expanded Online Voice Control functions requires a Volkswagen ID and active We Connect licence. Depending on the vehicle model and its equipment, you can use your voice to control lots of vehicle features and online services with ease.

ACC operates in a speed range between 30 km/h (20 mph) and 210 km/h (130 mph). This speed range may vary depending on the market. You can override ACC control at any time. When you brake, the control system is stopped. When you accelerate, it is interrupted for the duration of acceleration and then continues. If a trailer is attached to your vehicle, ACC offers less dynamic control. If the automatic deceleration triggered by ACC is not sufficient, the ACC will display a message in the instrument cluster prompting you to brake. The red warning lamp will light up and an audible warning will sound. ACC’s smart technology cannot override the laws of physics and operates exclusively within the system’s limitations. Drivers must never be led by the additional convenience into taking safety risks.
